A Musical Bridge to the Andes

CHASKINAKUY

In this assembly performance program, Edmond and Francy introduce students to Andean mountain culture, history, geography, and ecology through the music and musical instruments of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. The duo incorporates dance steps for the planting season, rhythmic clapping and drumming, and songs in Spanish and Quechua. Instruments include panpipes of feathers, flutes of bone and bamboo, goatskin drums, a ten-foot long trumpet, and a harp played upside-down evoking the sounds and images of high plateaus and rural celebrations.
