Yo Soy! Theater Flamenco SF School Assembly

The goal of the Yo Soy Program is to introduce students to the fundamental elements of Spanish dance in an engaging, educational, and interactive format. Students will learn about the core components that make up this art form, including guitar technique, castanet playing, expressive arm movements, rhythmic footwork, and the importance of rhythm—especially as demonstrated through traditional hand-clapping accompaniment.

The program opens with “Ole y Ole,” a lively selection inspired by Spain’s traditional dance forms. This upbeat and playful duet sets an energetic tone for the presentation while introducing students to the sound and technique of castanets.

During this piece, the dancers demonstrate traditional steps and share the cultural origins of the dance. Students learn how the distinctive tapping sound of Spanish dance shoes is created by small nails embedded in the toe and heel.

The relationship between footwork, castanets, and musical tempo is clearly illustrated. Students are then invited to participate by learning basic Spanish arm movements, encouraging active engagement and kinesthetic learning.

Next, the guitarist introduces the Spanish guitar, explaining how it differs from acoustic and electric guitars. Students learn about the types of wood used in its construction and how these materials affect sound quality. A short musical performance follows, highlighting the classical techniques that were just demonstrated and discussed.

The program continues with an introduction to palmas, the rhythmic hand-clapping tradition that accompanies flamenco dance. Students first learn a simple rhythm pattern and then practice maintaining that rhythm at different tempos. The group may be divided in half so students can experience layered rhythms by clapping complementary patterns together.

The program concludes with a brief tablao flamenco performance. Students are encouraged to accompany the dancers with their newly learned palmas, reinforcing their understanding through participation. Throughout the presentation, students gain firsthand exposure to the artistic traditions of Spain and the broader Hispanic world, fostering cultural appreciation through music, movement, and active learning.
