This assembly-style performance with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir takes students on a journey through the history of gospel and spiritual music, connecting its roots to modern genres. Terrance Kelly has selected key songs, and will lead students in an engaging exploration of the powerful traditions of Black gospel music and how it has influenced contemporary music styles. Key Elements include a live performance by the OIGC ensemble, demonstrating the energy and emotion of gospel music, interactive moments where students can join in through call-and-response singing, and a connection to modern music by showing how gospel music has shaped genres like pop, soul, and hip-hop. Learning outcomes for students include an understanding of gospel’s historical and cultural significance, the interconnectedness of various music genres, and inspiration to appreciate the power of collective music-making and community.
