Juju: The Talking Drums of Africa

Type: Assembly
Art Form: Music
Grade Level: K-5
Scheduling Request

Of Africa's many percussion and rhythmic styles, perhaps none is as contagiously danceable or challenging to play as that of Juju and highlife traditions. The central percussion instrument is the talking drum. In this assembly, Rasaki Aladokun and Pope Flynn will introduce students to the musical traditions of Nigeria and Ghana, showcasing folksongs from village life on their drums. Students will be introduced to percussion instruments including Djembe, talking drums, shekere, agogo, bata, and omele and how to produce music for all occasions! This Assembly can also be designed into school workshops.
